I wonder if anyone kept track. How many babies were thrown into the Nile? Did the parents even protest anymore, as they once did, or had they given up hope -- protesting but soon reassuring themselves with words like, "that's the way it goes..."? Did someone record each baby boy that was thrown into the Nile, honouring their life at least with the recording of a number, so that they might be remembered?
I wonder if the people lost hope making bricks and suffering under their slave master's whips. I wonder if they lost hope when they saw Pharaoh's people lurking around their homes, watching and listening for baby boys.
Yet this book comes right after Joseph has told his brothers, "[What you did, sending me to Egypt, getting rid of me,] you meant it for evil but God meant it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." (Genesis 50:20)
As you read through these passages before church tomorrow take notice of God's action. In this time of death and darkness, while Pharaoh tries to exercise his power, notice how God is still at work.
What is God doing?
How is God turning things for good (or is He)?
How is God shown as sovereign?
